Tell USDA: No Retreat on Healthy School Food!
Petition To USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue
Dear Secretary Perdue:
I am writing in opposition to the proposal announced on January 17, 2020, "Simplifying Meal Service and Monitoring Requirements in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs."
Children need a well-balanced diet at home and at school. In particular, we need to take advantage of the educational environment to reinforce healthy eating habits that last students a lifetime. This starts with a commitment to whole, nutrient-dense foods that help kids grow up healthy and meet their full potential.
Since 2010, school meal programs have vastly expanded their offerings of healthy, balanced meals to students. This progress represents a great start in the right direction, but there is still more work to do to improve meal quality and increase access to fresh, healthy food for every student, every day. Your proposal reverses this momentum, taking us back to the days when students could eat pizza and french fries on a daily basis.
I urge you to rescind the proposal and recommit your efforts to expanding access to healthy school food for every child.
