Please, vote NO on HB306 and HB1269 in House K-12 subcommittee on February 21.
HB306: Private schools can and, in many cases, already do restrict transgender student athletes. Passing an additional law is a form of taunting that is cruel and hurtful.
This bill serves no useful purpose, but it does send a horrible message to all transgender youth, namely, that their state wants to make sure that every possible entity and organization can discriminate against them.
HB1269: On March 31, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice sent a letter to every state attorney general saying that discrimination against transgender youth is sex discrimination and that it risks funding for states participating in federal programs. But even if there were no risk to education funding, it is important to create a supportive environment for every student. Using a student's pronouns is a form of basic respect and I urge you to speak out on the side of students.
The Legislature must focus on helping all youth flourish.
