Please, vote NO on HB30 and HB878 on the House floor on March 6.
HB30: Drag performance is not adult entertainment, but an art form. So the premise of this bill is deeply flawed. Requiring drag performers to get licensed is a burden to performers, businesses where drag performances take place, and to local governments. It is also not clear what performers are supposed to do if there is not adult-oriented board in the county or city where they are performing. This bill will result in selective enforcement because what is covered in the bill is vague.
HB878: In Civil Justice Committee a verbal amendment was put on the bill that says that no one is required to solemnize a marriage in Tennessee, which purports to be the current state of the law. If that is true, why is a new bill necessary? I do not support any version of this bill that allows public officials to refuse to marry a couple based on the wedding officiant's beliefs. That opens the door to all kinds of discrimination.
