Vote NO on HB1215 and HB1269 in Finance Subcommittee on March 15

Please, vote NO on HB1215 and HB1269 in House Finance Subcommittee on March 15.
HB1215: Despite what the fiscal note says, I urge the Finance Subcommittee to discuss the different scenarios that could play out with the bill and consider the costs to the state.
If fewer insurance companies are interested in becoming MCOs in the wake of the bill, then there is less competition and potentially higher costs and lower quality for Tennessee. Even if insurance companies do comply and participate, there is a risk to federal funds because the federal government will correctly construe this bill as discrimination. And, of course, there is the cost of court challenges to the measure.
HB1269: According to the fiscal note, Tennessee receives almost $1.3 Billion in federal education funding. This bill puts that funding at risk because it will encourage unlawful discrimination. The bill can only protect a school employee or a school from liability in state court. It cannot protect the employee or a school district from a lawsuit in federal court. It would be a far better and easier path if the state simply created an environment where all students are respected.
