Please, vote NO on HB727 in House K-12 Subcommittee on March 28.
This is another case where the amendment made the bill worse. It still has the burdensome requirement of opting in for parts of the curriculum, surveys, and clubs and activities, which takes up the time of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. But it adds provisions about sexual orientation and gender identity that have already been covered by a bill passed in 2021 that was sponsored by Rep. Moody. The section on school clubs in the Senate amendment also does not explicitly address students who are 18 and up whereas the other sections do. Are students who are 18 and up really required to get parental permission to join a club?
The other parent opt-in bill, HB1411, is up for a vote in the Education Administration Committee on March 29. The Senate sponsor seemed to think that the opt-in bills are being combined in some way. If Rep. Fritts moves HB1411 on March 29, please vote NO on it for the same reasons that I outlined in my opposition to HB727.
