Honorable members of the Fayette County Commission:
We urge you to vote against Commissioner Reggie Howard's resolution opposing President Obama's guidance on the civil rights of transgender students.
The resolution was not timely filed so that the public would have sufficient notice. This amounts to government by secrecy.
The resolution supports discrimination against transgender students when the County Commission should support and represent all residents.
The resolution has not been carefully thought through from the point of view of educational needs and current practices in Tennessee schools.
The resolution invites negative publicity for the county.
The resolution should be weighed in terms of the legal liability it invites for county government.
Thank you for considering our views.
