Protect NC Tenants in Hotels, Motels, RV Parks, and Campgrounds

Dear [title] [last name],

I am writing to ask you to remove the language stripping tenants rights from residents in Hotels, Motels, RV Parks, and Campgrounds.

While the bill defines ‘transient occupancy’ as fewer than 90 consecutive days, unscrupulous hotel owners could simply require tenants to move rooms and sign new contracts every 89 days to keep them from gaining access to their rights. This language would mean that tenants could be immediately removed for trespassing rather than given due process through an eviction proceeding.

The justification being used is that hotel owners need to be able to rapidly remove tenants who engage in dangerous or illegal activity. However, existing tenant and criminal laws already give hotel owners this power. What this bill does is give hotel owners the right to immediately remove law abiding residents.

At a time when affordable permanent housing, as well as emergency housing, is already lacking, this bill will only add to the crisis when so many are struggling to get back on their feet. We are asking you to strongly oppose this language in HB366 and allow people to use emergency housing without ongoing harassment and fear of experiencing homelessness. North Carolinians need shelter, and the opportunity to be safe while they work to gain permanent housing. We are asking you to work on solutions to this housing crisis - not add unnecessary legislation to the problem.
