Please, vote NO on HB1676 on Tuesday in the House Education Instruction Subcommittee.
This bill concentrates authority in the State Board of Education to reject, adopt, and revise standards for language, math, social studies, and science instruction in K-12 education.
The effect of this shift of authority away from the standards recommendation committees to the State Board of Education further politicizes the important process of shaping the curriculum for Tennessee students.
The move also misses an opportunity to bring local education agencies and school boards into the process by ignoring their experience and concentrating decision-making at the top. That means that decisions are made further and further away from students, parents, teachers, principals, and communities.
The Legislature should take more time to engage all stakeholders before revising the instruction standards process.
