Vote NO on HB578 on Feb 9 in Health Committee

Please, vote NO on HB578 when it comes before the House Health Committee on February 9.
Everyone has the right to seek best practice health care, including transgender youth and their families. And physicians have a right to provide it. The State of Tennessee should not unilaterally alter the standard of care or put it into our law code, thereby making health care access more difficult.
Denying best practices in medical care and support to transgender youth can be life-threatening.  It has been shown to contribute to depression, social isolation, self-hatred, risk of self-harm, and suicidal behavior.
Institutions including the Endocrine Society, American Medical Society, American Psychological Society, American Psychiatric Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics all advocate for supporting children as they navigate gender identity concerns. And they all agree that safely guided gender transition in children (in collaboration with parents and medical providers) is not a criminal offense, but standard and ethical practice.

Summary

This bill changes the standard of health care for transgender youth and criminalize any departure from it.This bill makes accessing health care more difficult and violates the rights of trans children and youth to seek best-practice health care and the rights of physicians to provide it.
