Several bills important to me are on the Senate Education calendar for March 23. I ask you to vote NO on these bills when they come before you.
SB2777: This bill props up school personnel that show disrespect to students by ignoring their pronouns. It is hard to understand why the Legislature would help adults bully students. Research shows that students do better when educational policies guarantee respect for their gender. When policies and school personnel are hostile, the results are devastating.
SB1216: This bill erases LGBTQ people in textbooks. LGBTQ people are part of history, civics, literature, the arts, and all subjects. This bill stigmatizes LGBTQ students. The Legislature should send a message that all students belong in our schools. Passing this bill compromises that goal and amounts to censorship.
SB2153 and SB1861: These bills extend the ban on transgender athletes to college students and add to penalties for local school districts that are not in compliance with the ban passed last year by the General Assembly. Instead of passing these bills, the Legislature should look at policies that allow everyone to participate in sports because of the mental and physical health benefits.
SB1944: The premise of this bill is that school librarians are putting obscenity before students. What school librarians do every week is professionally provide age-appropriate materials to our students. This bill will lead to endless book challenges that will disrupt the educational process and land schools in court for censorship.
Thank you for considering my views on these bills.
