Vote NO on SB30/HB33

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to oppose SB30/HB33.

These bills seek to require that the words ‘husband,’ ‘wife,’ ‘mother,’ and ‘father’ be given their “natural and ordinary meaning…that are based on the biological distinctions between men and women.”

The intent of these bills is clear: To roll-back the rights of LGBT Tennesseans. SB30/HB33 threatens to undermine the constitutionally protected right for same-sex couples to marry, and to hamstring adoptions rights for LGBT parents—and potentially much more.

SB30/HB33 are radically far-reaching in scope. The words ‘husband,’ ‘wife,’ ‘mother,’ and ‘father’ appear so frequently in Tennessee legal code that SB30/HB33 is SURE to have unintended consequences far beyond what anyone can predict right now.

In short, this legislation is unnecessary and dangerous. It puts LGBT Tennesseans in the line of fire and risks tarnishing Tennessee’s state brand—only to accomplish nothing. I urge you to oppose SB30/HB33.

Thank you for your consideration.
