Please, vote NO on HB1 when it comes before the Civil Justice Committee.
Youth and parents have a special bond that the state should not interfere with when families are making important healthcare decisions. Families accessing gender-affirming care make informed decisions in consultation with counselors and physicians about what is best for them. Please, speak with transgender youth and their families and learn about their deliberate, thoughtful process. It is painful that the Legislature has not been learning from the stories of parents trying to protect the lives of their kids.
When you talk to them you will see why institutions including the Endocrine Society, American Medical Society, American Psychological Society, American Psychiatric Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics all advocate for supporting youth as they navigate gender identity concerns. And they all agree that safely guided gender transition in youth (in collaboration with parents and medical providers) is not abuse, but standard and ethical practice.
Thank you for considering my views.
