Please, vote NO on SB466 and SB1237 in the Senate Education Committee on March 29.
SB466 deals with student pronouns at school. There is a great deal of misinformation on this issue. It really comes down to respect. In hurts no adult to use a student's pronouns, but it is harmful to students when school personnel show them disrespect. Supportive policies improve educational outcomes for trans students. The January 27, 2022 report from the Society for Research in Child Development concluded: “Ultimately, transgender youth show more positive outcomes in school environments that implement and enforce policies and practices that affirm youth’s gender identity and protect them from discrimination.”
In addition, please note the fiscal note on SB466. Tennessee receives almost $1.3 Billion in federal education funds. The discriminatory implications of the bill put that funding at risk.
SB1237 uses the structure of the TSSAA to require private schools to exclude transgender athletes. What precedent does this set for using TSSAA to regulate private schools in other ways? This is government overreach and the bill sends a terrible message to all transgender students regardless of whether they are involved in sports.
I am tired of bills that target transgender youth. The Legislature should focus on helping all students succeed.
Thank you for considering my views.
