Legalize medical aid in dying in New York!
As your constituent, I am writing to express my strong support for A.2694 (Paulin)/S.3947 (Savino), legislation to provide terminally ill New Yorkers with the option of medical aid in dying. Medical aid in dying is the process by which terminally ill, mentally competent adult patients under a doctor’s care may obtain and self-administer medicine which would enable them to end their suffering and achieve a peaceful death.
The bill includes numerous safeguards to protect patients, reflecting the lessons learned in states where medical aid in dying is already legal including Oregon, Washington, Vermont, California, Colorado, DC, Montana and Hawaii. The laws have worked as intended as a safe and humane practice which benefits patients and families and causes no harm.
Numerous organizations support medical aid in dying in New York, including, among many others, the New York State Academy of Family Physicians, the New York State Public Health Association, the New York Civil Liberties Union, the League of Women Voters of New York State and New York StateWide Senior Action Council. There has been editorial support across the state in such newspapers as The New York Times, Newsday, Albany Times-Union and the Buffalo News.
I urge you to sponsor A. 2694(Paulin)/S. 3947 (Savino), and to vote for it.
