CAMPAIGN DESCRIPTION

The budget released by the City Manager does almost nothing to reduce Austin's spending on police. Community groups have demanded $100 million in cuts! The new budget must sweep all empty positions, all cadets for this fiscal year (the Academy needs significant reform and is now closed,) cut police overtime and use that money to build alternative first response systems. Other kinds of staff can do jobs police do now -- from mental health first response to posting yellow cones around stalled cars or waiving cars into rush hour traffic. New systems will be just as safe and far less expensive than using high cost police officers for far too many tasks.
