Tell your legislators: Increase the funding for BOOST Scholarships
As a Catholic in your district, I am asking you to support the low-income families in our community by voting to increase funding for the BOOST Scholarship Program to $10 million next school year.
BOOST (the Broadening Options and Opportunities Today Scholarship Program) has empowered thousands of Maryland families with the ability to choose new educational options for their children by providing scholarships to attend Catholic or other nonpublic schools.
For the students receiving these scholarships, it is helping close the achievement gap and allowing them to thrive in school.
This year, the demand for the program increased by 25% and there is a waiting list for scholarships. The average family income for qualifying students is just under $33,000 a year, and the majority of recipients are students of color. More than one-in-three recipients is an English Language Learner. This program is truly serving those in need.
But more funding is needed so that BOOST can provide for all those who qualify. The proposed budget funds this program at $10 million for next year and I am asking you to support that by voting YES on that BOOST funding.
As a Catholic, I believe that parents have the ability to choose the right fit for their child’s education and BOOST enables those who might not otherwise be able to afford it with the means to do so.
As my elected representative, I am asking that you support this vital program and the proposed increase in funding.
